Autism Diagnosis
Autism is a developmental condition that affects how people perceive, communicate, and interact with the world around them. It is called a “spectrum” because it encompasses a wide range of characteristics and abilities, varying significantly from one individual to another.

Key Characteristics:
Social Communication and Interaction Challenges:
- Difficulty understanding social cues, such as body language or tone of voice.
- Challenges in forming and maintaining relationships.
- Preference for structured or predictable social interactions.
Repetitive Behaviors and Restricted Interests:
- Repeating specific actions, phrases, or routines (e.g., lining up objects or hand-flapping).
- Intense focus on particular topics or hobbies.
Sensory Sensitivities:
- Over- or under-sensitivity to sensory stimuli such as sounds, lights, textures, or smells.
Strengths and Abilities:
- Many individuals with autism have unique talents, such as exceptional memory, logical thinking, creativity, or skills in specific areas like math, music, or art.
Diagnosis:
Autism is typically diagnosed in childhood, though it can be identified at any age. Diagnosis involves observing behavior and developmental history, often assessed using standardized tools.
Causes:
The exact cause of autism is not fully understood, but research suggests it results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is not caused by parenting or vaccines.
Support and Treatment:
While there is no “cure” for autism, early intervention and tailored support can help individuals develop skills and improve their quality of life. Common interventions include:
- Behavioral therapy (e.g., ABA therapy).
- Speech and language therapy.
- Occupational therapy.
- Social skills training.
- Educational and community-based support.
Each person with autism is unique, and understanding their individual needs and strengths is key to fostering inclusion and growth.

The Diagnostic Process
It is important to not that our process is not only evidence-based but it also adheres to the NICE guidelines. All our assessors are trained practioners and hold enhanced DBS checks.
Stage 1:
Initial Contact
You can reach us by calling 07850 85 60 66 between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. If we’re unavailable, please leave a message, text, or WhatsApp, and one of the team will get back to you. Alternatively, you could complete the short enquiry form online letting us know a suitable time for us to contact you.
Stage 2:
Discussing Your Assessment
Prior to the assessment, you will receive a call from us to discuss your needs and ensure that this is the right process for you. If unsure about an autism assessment, we can arrange for a clinical lead to help determine whether it’s what you need at this time or not.
Stage 3:
Gathering Background Information
This is an important step in the diagnostic process. We use evidence-based questionnaires which are chosen depending on your circumstances. For school children, for instance, we tend to include information gathered from your child’s school with your consent. This is a process that most schools are familiar with.
Stage 4:
Assessment Sessions
The autism assessment includes two sessions, scheduled at your convenience.
- Session 1: A semi-structured observation session. This is carried out in a suitable quiet environment. We provide all the materials needed for the observational assessment. A parent or carer can be present if need be. The session includes two trained clinicians; one main assessor and the other an observer.
- Session 2: A history-based interview with the parent/s and/or guardian/s.
Stage 5:
Outcome and Recommendations
All the information gathered from the history-based interview, observation session and background information will be reviewed by the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
A feedback meeting will then be arranged with yourself and the clinician or clinicians who carried out the assessment to discuss the results with you, answer any questions you may have, and offer advice on the next steps for you or your child.
A comprehensive report summarizing the diagnostic findings and relevant information will also be provided. This will be useful for your child’s school as well as for any additional help that your might need in supporting your child should they be diagnosed as being autistic.

You as the parents and/or carers will be interviewed too so gain as much additional information as possible.
